Katholische Johanneskirche - Luzern, Switzerland

A delayed flight and a missed train meant my visit to Katholische Johanneskirche in Luzern, Switzerland didn’t go as planned. The church was closed, but the exterior left a lasting impression.

Designed by Walter Maria Förderer, this Brutalist landmark is more than just a place of worship. The complex includes a chapel, parish centre, residential units, and a school, all arranged around a lush inner courtyard. It’s a striking example of Brutalism… raw concrete, bold geometry, and the cohesion of community whilst softened by its seamless integration with nature.

Recently declared a protected heritage site by the Luzern canton, the church’s grey facade stood quietly powerful against the overcast sky. With pops of colour from plants and trees, the building and its grounds invite reflection when rooted in community and landscape.
